GeoMundus conference in Münster: A great success for Erasmus Mundus students

Jan 12

The students of the Erasmus Mundus Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies once again hosted their annual symposium with great success. The free conference took place at the Institute of Geoinformatics in Münster, Germany, on the 10th and 11th of November 2017. The over 60 attendees from all over the world included students, professionals from academia and the industry, and people curious to learn about the field and its latest developments.

This conference has enabled the sharing of cutting-edge scientific research, knowledge, skills, and facilitated networking within the field of geospatial technologies for 10 years, and this year was no exception. The keynote speakers delivered detailed insight into their work, which ranged from how to link crime statistics with location, to the latest technology such as drones. Some of the topics were then deepened in five workshops organised for the attendees on Saturday afternoon. From learning how to fly a drone, to programming and online mapping, everyone could choose a topic according to their liking. Yet the dynamic exchange of knowledge, ideas and business cards was not limited to the talks, workshops, and lunchbreaks: The conference dinner was the favourite time to network and socialise. With over 70 people attending, the cosy yet vibrant atmosphere in the restaurant enabled conversations of both personal and professional nature.

Additionally, students and alumni of the CARTO and GeoTech Erasmus Mundus Masters had the opportunity to meet and to discuss how to further promote EM courses. Possible improvements of the EM course map and a EM mobility app were topics, as well as how to deepen the connection between the EMA members by facilitating more exchange. GeoMundus has been a platform for this exchange since 2008 and will continue to do so in the future, yet developments in technology offer new opportunities worth exploring.

Upon closing time of the conference on Saturday evening, both attendees and organisers left the premises satisfied with the two days spent, and looking forward to GeoMundus 2018.
