The opportunity to give the talk on the plugin was the result of a community vote on abstract and topic submissions. The plugin focused on the analysis of digital elevation models (DEM) collected of the same area but temporally different. The analysis between two temporally different DEMs, Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) or Digital Surface Models (DSMs) can indicate important factors such as erosion, structural damage, or deforestation. The plugin automated the steps within QGIS to process and display these changes within a 3D environment. In addition, it introduced a relatively new way of assessing possible errors within in DEMs generated from Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) optical imagery processed using photogrammetry. Carlos Delgado and Moritz Hildemann presented the topic of 3D-routing for urban air taxis. The 3D network analysis aims on finding a network which corresponds with the flight laws while considering points and areas of interest to the citizens like recreational parks, school or embassies.

Jordan Bates and Tanmoy Chakraborty presented on flood risk assessment and mitigation using unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) data. Their analysis combined several high-resolution data sets while incorporating multi-criteria decision making with least-cost networks to understand the direction water would most likely flow after it has surpassed the river crest.

We were able to meet professionals in the field of Geoinformation Science and could gain many insights. Not only were we able to gather recommendations and feedback for improving our research topics, also we gathered information and new impulses in different Geoinformation-related topics. We also attended a very interesting workshop about R for GIS. Moreover, we enjoyed the pretty island of Cyprus. We had a very nice time and are grateful for the monetary support for the flights by the Erasmus Mundus program and for the support for the accommodation and conference costs by AGILE.

Graduates, family, friends, and teachers of the three universities celebrated it at the graduation ceremony in Münster on March 11. The freshly graduates received their certificates for the joint degree provided by the universities of Münster, Lisbon, and Castellón.

Prof. Kray (University of Münster) and Stefana Cioban (student representative) highlighted the unique experience of such an international program with students from all over the world – for learning, teaching, research, and personal life. The “best student award” has been given to Lucas van der Meer. The stories of the “real student party” after the graduation ceremony have not been passed on yet….

The talk was entitled “Our experience in the geospatial business”. Jelena opened the talk to briefly introduce IDOM, facts and numbers, offices worldwide, etc. In IDOM, GIS is transversal to most of the strategic areas of the company (transport, utility and energy, industry and e-government).

Next, Raul explained a list of selected projects, either past or on-going, developed by IDOM. Smart Transport Information System Abu Dhabi (DARB) is an interactive map-based web application that provides mobility-related functions such as a multi-modal journey planner, carpooling and user-generated reports of new traffic incidents. It is a good example of an operational GIS project as a way to integrate distinct data providers and data sources around the common denominator of location.

Raul continued with an ongoing project that is being developed in North America, resolving around train carrier management and tracking logistic in US, Canada and Mexico. The project is a remarkable example in terms of integration of diverse data providers in almost real-time using a web-based dashboard to watch how the goods move.

Raul finished with some tips on career development opportunities for GIS professionals, from the perspective of IDOM – a big player in industry. The trend now is that everything is being merged, so the value is in mixing systems and disciplines (aka business intelligence). Regarding the analytical part, the trend is in (geo) cloud platforms such as AGOL, Carto and Mapbox. Data science tools are also gaining importance like Jupyter notebooks with spatial intelligence on top of big data architecture. On a final note, Raul projects that retail and finance are becoming new business areas beyond of the classical ones such as logistics, management, and mobility.

An open call for future GIS professional: IDOM seeks professionals and engineers with hard skills (technical knowledge) but especially with soft skills (empathy, problem solving, teamwork, communication skills)

The presentation was followed by a vivid discussion between the two speakers and all students, who were really interested in developing their TFM thesis in industry settings.

GeoMundus is a free conference held by students for students. Since its inception, this conference has enabled the sharing of cutting-edge scientific research, knowledge, skills, and facilitated networking within the field of geospatial technologies.

This year was the 10th Edition thus students prepared a special documentary. Moreover this edition has had the largest number of participants: 171.

The organisers of GeoMundus secured 5 high-profile keynote speakers: Michael Goodchild (USA), Francisco Pinto (Mexico), Miguel de Castro Neto (Porugal), Bruno Martins (Portugal) and Monica Wachowicz (Canada), who shared their expertise with the attendees. Moreover, the conference counted on the presentation of 10 articles, divided in 5 sessions, about several relevant topics in geospatial research

The programme of GeoMundus was unique in that it expanded the structure of conference talks by also featuring workshops where participants could experience first-hand the future of geospatial technologies.

Additionally, there was a career session providing a great opportunity for students interested professionally in geospatial technologies.
